WATN?..Cont
WES McGHEE
aka Wes "One-Lung" McTwang
Former Club Chairman and now Hon Life Member
This rare photograph typifies the cricketer Wes was / is!.. Walking AWAY from the pitch, holding the bat by the wrong end...and probably trying to find somewhere to have a crafty fag!...but my,.. could he bowl!!
By far the clubs most successful bowler taking 709 wickets with an average of 14.30, with 31 x 5 wkt/inns and a best of 9 for 36 v Sutton back in 1985, a feat so far unequalled.
Never batting higher than No11 he (and we) endured 164 innings of his dogged left hand defence, often saving the game for the inevitable draw he was not out 75 times!! No idea how he scored 390 actual runs and even managed a highest score of 25, one of only 2 innings of 20 or more!
Lasting memory of Wes at his peak occupying one end on tour at West Malvern bowling 17 overs without a break and still skulked off to the boundary having been taken off by Arthur to let a guest bowl the final over of the innnings!
Privately Wes is still the king of country rock and spends his days in his recording studio at his home just off the end of the main runway at Stansted, Guitarist extraordinaire, if you ever get the chance to see the Wes McGhee Band live..do it!!...just don't expect to be able to hear anything for a couple of days after!!
Only the lack of a lung stops him from re-donning his whites and returning to the fold.
Poor excuse!
