Game 1 v Shamley Green 26th April 2009
Weather: Sunny. Toss Won By: Chadwick (Field). Result: DRAW
Shamley Green 298 for 4 dec (T) Chadwick 140 for 9
A total shambles at Shamley as we scraped a draw from the jaws of defeat!... A couple of club records were broken though not ones we wanted...! Slight reprieve on record one!! The scoreboard showed Shamley to be the first team ever to score over 300 against us when they declared early twenty minutes before tea... but after a recount as neither the batting or bowling figures matched the tally score...the agreed compromise total was set at 298...still though the "Highest Against".
Record two...the first time ever BOTH openers scored centuries...their young No 2 surviving two or three missed chances before trying a cocky KP reverse sweep, top edging into the safe hands of Fawcett in the gulley. for a 101.. Georghiou bowling the plum! Having also reached his century (107) the more "senior" No 1 was totally "f**"ed"...though he officially "retired hurt"!! lol...
Fawcett clean bowled their No 3 and Georghiou eventually bagged 3...but for a whopping 112 off 11 as all the bowlers took a bit of a battering!!!..It could have been much worse as of course their tiny triangular pitch with 2 roads inside the boundary..means some "sixes" were only "fours" etc, and we used about 6 match balls, having "lost" most of them in nearby gardens or roofs!! don't you just love the qurkiness of English Village Cricket!!
After the early and excellent tea we confidently set about chasing the target...that confidence lasting five overs as Jerricho the first to go for 6. Georghiou asked to go up the order as he needed to leave early...well he managed both! Batting at three he made three and left. Cutler was still holding up one end when skipper Lailey strode to the middle for a "captains innings" and duly obliged as they shared a 3rd wicket partnership of 69, Cutler top scoring by a mile, eventually out for a solid 70 and whilst we were no longer chasing the total, we were looking to at least save some face as well as the game! The score was on 124 for 3 when Lailey fell for 28 and with 6 overs remaining it was simply a case of seeing them out...well I say simply...no-one had accounted for the Infamous "Chadwick Collapse" as 5 wickets fell for 9 runs in 5 and a bit overs!! Leaving a stoic Fawcett to join Ballantine senior to face the final four balls to rescue the draw, which thankfully he did, hitting a glorious four just to set the pulses racing on the bench!
To summarise, although we didn't lose, we were thrashed, but not as much as Shamley's insurance premium will be as at least 3 local roofs lost tiles...ah well its only a game!

Can't start the season without ripping the pee out of Jerricho...last seen on BBC 2 playing The Pope, dressed as "Dorothy" form the Wizard of Oz...dancing down the yellow brick road...saying... "There's no place like Rome"....deep joy!!
Game 2 v Banstead 2nd May
Weather: Bright but breezy Toss Won By: Chadwick (Field). Result: DRAW
Banstead 193 for 7 dec (T) Chadwick 137 for 7
Appallingly let down on the morning of the match by codpiece Smallman, we were 10 again...this week without the dog! On a sunny but slightly chilly afternoon at beautiful Banstead, skipper Lailey went two for two winning the toss and opting to filed...turning out to be a top tosser once again!
Off to a decent start too with some fine bowling from Dougall (2 for 62) and Griffith (3 for 34), but most importantly an excellent performance behind the stumps from Tim "Teflon" Ballantine with two fine catches as we had them at 27 for 4...but then this is the Banstead boys and the ever reliable Nicky Hunt proved defiant yet again with 80 not out. Fawcett (1 for 13) bagged one and then foolishly attempted a slip catch off Cutler with his shin and had to leave the field...primarily for ice, but more importantly for some TLC and a fairy cake from our excellent band of "laaaydeee" supporters (see pics page!)
Will Thornton got his first wicket of the season but no luck for Cutler and Looker other than this is his last game before tying the knot with the lovely Jane a week next saturday (Stag & Hen do's next weekend..oh dear!..very messy)... mind you she's not letting him play on the sunday even though they don't go on honeymoon till the Monday...well maybe he'll be too tired!!!...oi oi..!!!
As usual we enjoyed an excellent tea served with military precision but sadly no abuse as the lovely Elaine was on holiday with a hunky man apparently...phew... takes the pressure off me!!..lol..Back on the pitch we set about chasing the target, a swashbuckling start with Toby "The Cutlass" Cutler smashing two fours off the first 3 deliveries, but then..oh dear..5th ball.. out to the worst LBW decision ever by an "umpire in training" being assessed by the other Ump who had lots of badges on his white coat, causing all the oppo and the badged up ump to apologise after the game...too late methinks!! Skipper Lailey strode to the middle like a man on a mission and played a blinder, despite being stuck on 49 for 5 overs he ended the day 64 not out, at the other end however Jerricho had shut up shop batting out 28 overs for 17 runs in a 2nd wkt partnership of 81. As always it was the wily old pro Bill Early causing havoc with the ball bagging four of us for 31 with 6 maidens in his spell of 13. The usual minor mid order Chadwick collapse caused a few heart flutters, with a second goldie in a row for Big Joe but Dougall steadied the ship as the overs diminished, though it was left to Rocky and Teflon to see out the final maiden to salvage the draw.
Really looking forward the our next visit on the 12th July for the Bill Frindall memorial challenge, the 40 over format will produce a result, the trophy has been commisioned and the fake beards have been ordered, but above all the hospitality as always will be appreciated by all.... oh and i did hear the umpire in training went on to referee the Chelsea / Barcelona match....

And just like London buses that come in twos...Jerricho was on the telly again this week, this time as the consultant that told big Heather on EastEnders she was pregnant!...we reckon he's also the daddy!!
Game 3 v Medmenham 10th May
Weather: Glorious Toss Won By: Medmenham (Bat) Result: DRAW
Medmenham 231 for 6 dec (T) Chadwick 142 for 8
A glorious day for our annual outing to the Oxfordshire countryside to the newly revitalised Medders!
After many years of shunting from ground to ground they are now firmly settled in the immaculate surroundings of the SAS Institute (no not the "Who Dares Wins" lot but a software company!) clearly well financed as the icing on the cake is the addition of a spanking new pavilion complete with a wood carved cricketer statue keeping a close eye on proceedings... see pics page for a special spot the difference competition!!
Also...how camp is this?...Max "Hollywood" Howard flew in from Hawaii en route to the Cannes Film Festival and squeezed in this game!!
Well Rocky resorted to being a useless tosser as Medmenham put themselves in and we were put out to roast in the field!! That said this was a game that had more twists and turns than anything on Strictly Come Dancing... Tight opening spells from Dougall and Fawcett and they found it hard to score, the odd dropped chance and a change of bowling and they opened up, a couple of quick wickets dismissing the openers and again we were on top. Fawcett learnt his lesson from last week and actually used his hands and not his shin to take a fine catch at 1st slip giving Atterbury his first wicket of the season. Cutler was bagging the spoils at the other end with a fine four-fer, but Medmenham have depth in their batting and we were basically undone by their number 4 who raced to a 50 and it has to be said with a fair amount of luck went on to end his day on 133 not out. A great catch in the very deep mid wicket from Thornton a mere consolation having seen a few fly over his head as they let loose in the final overs before tea, this also gave Hill his first of the season and made his day a little sweeter having arrived an hour late after a long drive down from Hereford... (Alastair and I have a long drive every week!!)
After an excellent (but pricey) tea we set about chasing, an hour and 20 overs from 6 seemed a bit short but we had about the same amount of overs in the end!
"Chocolate" Thornton volunteered to open and "Hawaii" Howard joined him before jet lag set in and found it as tough as their openers to score. Chances also going down... in fact Lailey was dropped 3 times in the same over!!! ..as our innings began to resemble theirs.. except our big hitting No 4 Cutler was out for a whirlwind 48...so time to shut up shop with a few overs remaining and would you believe it another mini Chadwick collapse, but thankfully this time too late although just for fun Atterbury was stumped off the final ball...leaving Fawcett and Ballantine all padded up and nowhere to go!!...apart from, of course, the pub where mine hosts had laid on sausage and chips and an amount of "free" booze for those wishing to part with a tenner...exit most of Chadwick... though I think Lawrence Hill might still be there...

Game 4 v British Library 17th May
Weather: Blustery Toss Won By: British Library (Field) Result: DRAW
Chadwick 171 for 4 dec (T) British Library 93 for 6
Report by Nick Fordham....
Poking his head outside the bedroom window on Sunday morning, in order to hail the rising sun, your correspondent was greeted, instead, by dark brooding clouds and rain falling as freely as cash into an MPs pockets. Having been to a wedding the previous day, and liberally partaken of the free refreshments (after winning the ‘team lush’ award at last season’s do one has a reputation to maintain), your correspondent has to confess to feeling more than a little bit relieved that the game would almost certainly be cancelled. And so back to bed: But as the head cleared so did the skies and by midday it was clearly game on.
Thanks to late cancellations (your correspondent not being the only one to go to a wedding the previous day) we had a scratch team comprising of eight Chadwickians, a guest (of whom more later), a ten year old boy and our perennial standby fielder and fairy cake maker- the lovely Lisa.
For once, the oppo were even more useless than us and only managed nine players. Nevertheless, on winning the toss their skipper put us into to bat, much to the relief of all and sundry who beat a retreat to the relative warmth of the pavilion. Conditions were chilly and gusty and when asked if we could spare a couple of fielders the response was less than enthusiastic.
Opening for us this week were Thornton (for the second week in a row) and Lailey. With the blustery conditions and uneven bounce of the wicket (which proved the undoing of Thornton) scoring runs didn’t come easy. But, not for the first time this season, it was Cutler and Lailey who laid the foundations of the Chadwick innings with a 2nd wicket partnership of 44 before the skipper was caught, for 27, by none other than our very own Joe Griffith sub fielding at Mid On!! A brief cameo from Shenley, who like Thornton got one that reared up surprisingly high and Perera came to the crease. By this stage Cutler was playing his strokes more fluently (another hung-over player!) and was beginning to really open up. Unfortunately the first victim of his swashbuckling strokes was Trevor, who whilst diligently following up was struck by one of Toby’s drives that hit him hard on the chest before ricocheting onto his jaw. A clearly shaken (but not stirred) Perera retired hurt for 10. Asked if he might return at the end of the innings if required Perera glanced first at the chilly field of play, then at the warming Marlboro light in his hand and declared ‘probably not’. Clearly Chadwick had a lot of work to do. Atterbury joined Cutler at the crease and another fruitful partnership added 40 odd runs to the board before Cutler was clean bowled attempting another boundary. With limited time remaining, Atterbury took the innings by the scruff of the neck and smashed the beleaguered Library bowlers to all sides of the ground, and, aided and abetted by Fordham, added a further 46 runs to the scoreboard in the last five overs of the innings, reaching his maiden half century for Chadwick with a fine four off the last ball of the innings. Chadwick got to tea with 171 runs for the loss of only four wickets – a good effort all round, especially from Cutler (67) and Atterbury (50no).
After a tasty tea, it was back to the field of play, which looked even less hospitable after a warming mug of tea. Thornton, having only just warmed up after fielding for the opposition, decided to put his anorak on underneath his cricket jumper and in doing so made himself an early favourite for the sartorial elegance award. Griffith and Cutler opened the bowling and both produced very tidy and economical spells: Cutler conceding only 9 runs in his 9 overs throughout the whole innings. Griffith accounted for two of the early wickets, a caught behind for the opener – Shenley being very tidy behind the wicket all afternoon- and clean bowling their number 3. Then the skipper had the luxury of bringing on Bedfordshire’s fastest bowler (albeit at an under 11 level!) Young Sam Cutler showed he had a very fine action for a quick bowler and can consider himself unlucky not to have got a wicket. Clearly this lad will be as good as his Uncle one day and I suggest Chadwick have a whip round in the clubhouse to pay his membership fees so we can see more of him in the future. Also, there are no flies on this lad because as soon as his spell was over he feigned injury so he could get back to the warmth of the pavilion and polish off Lisa’s cakes (not the first player to resort to this tactic this season either!) Meanwhile on the pitch a slow scoring British Library were batting out a draw (they also took advantage of a break for rain to buy time). But who are Chadwick to complain – having batting out a draw in all our previous games this season it was time for us to get a taste of our own medicine. British Library were 93 for 6 at the end of the day and a draw was declared. Griffith, with 3 for 17 from 10 was the pick of the Chadwick bowlers. A special mention, and thanks, must go to Don Cutler who umpired both innings and our loyal supporters who, despite the gloomy conditions, stuck it out to the bitter end; unlike our guest for the day who arrived, surveyed the scene, quietly retired to the cosy clubhouse to watch the Chelsea football game and was never seen again. Oh well… you win some, you lose some…but at Chadwick, this season, we seem to favour the draw.

Game 5 v Goldleaf 24th May
Weather: Lovely Toss Won By: Chadwick (Dougall) (Bat) Result: Lost by 5 wkts
Chadwick 119 all out (9) (T) Goldleaf 122 for 5
After a four year absence we were back at Goldleaf in the sunny suburbs of South Croydon and the Subba Row's back garden...sort of! Up on the smaller 2nds pitch we at least benefitted from the shade of the surrounding trees and the added bonus of a portaloo means no more scrambling up the bank for a wee behind the groundsmans shed....Toby!!!
With Lailey absent (along with most of the membership it seems) Dougall took the helm and won the toss (and there our success ends) opting to bat as we were 9 at the start with Max H delayed en route from The Cannes Film Festival (there must be an award for that!) even then we only had 10.
Also nice to see Jim Howard, on day release from the home, being the latest in a long line to try and teach Tim the finer arts of scoring...at least Timmy tries eh!! I did a spot of umpiring with camera in pocket and took some "action" (loose term) shots...see photos page! Sub Skipper Dougall (12) made a rip roaring start showing intent from the very first ball, from a particularly aggresive young-ish opening bowler...in the "try to knock their blocks off" category but without the control, sadly like most things in life, the excitement ended prematurely, as he got a fat old outside edge dollying one straight back to him and the strutting began! Jerricho was solid (the polite term for boring) at the otherend hanging around for ages for his 1... which under the terms of the volatile attack was almost acceptable, as with exception of the ever impressive Cutler (56) we all struggled to make runs. Perera and Griffith came and went in 2 balls and it was left to Max to deprive him of a hat-trick...with that opportunity long gone a bowling change went our way a bit as Howard (13) Ballantine (13) and Fawcett (10) the only other batsmen to get double figures edged us towards a nearly repectable total, at one stage we were 27 for 4...so reaching 3 figures was almost a result!
As we were all out with 40 minutes remaining, tea was taken early....having agreed the terms of the match at the start... "we bat till tea...then an hour and 20 overs"..it was only slightly irritating that midway through their innings they decided to "add" the missing 40 minutes to their innings time without consulting our captain...not of course that they needed it...but its the principal!! Also their umpire wasn't quite so lenient as ours on the contentious "leg side wide" rule!! Starting to sound like we are bad losers, we're not...we're very good at it!! (lol) but do feel that all should be fair and these things cause uneccessary niggles for a friendly match on an otherwise sunny Sunday!
On a positive note Griffith was a demon with the ball proving there's no need for strutting if you have the ability..his 13 overs, including 5 maidens, bringing 3 wickets, which as always should have been more if only we held our catches!! Mind you I wouldn't have wanted to be under the couple of "ice cubes" that followed guest Roger Gunesekera around the depths of cow corner...!
Dougall occupying the other end ( ah.. the benefits of captaincy eh? opening bat and bowling??.. I AM JOKING AL!!)..equally efficient bagged one, as did Cutler,...but I got the impression they were not their regular top 5 and with a low total to chase, the gaps in the field and the local knowledge their obviously decent 6 & 7 bats scored quickly needing barely 26 overs for the victory ...and we didn't even win anything in their raffle!!! Maybe next time...

Report by Branson Atterbury....
Baking hot day, zero hangover count amongst the younger members and a genuine buzz of excitement at the prospect of fielding a decent 11. Gokul Swamy had landed and we were looking forward to something special from him and a guest had been procured on account of his illustrious past including 121 coaching by the great Allan Donald: Gareth This-is-actually-my-short-run-up Londt. It’s always very heartening to see colleagues put themselves through a bit of pain on a hot summer’s day for the general good. For the record, GTL has been limping about and groaning a fair bit this week. Good lad.
Slight problem on way to game: cyclists not content with annoying the motoring population of London, they had taken it upon themselves to have a crack at the good people of Brighton ... albeit temporarily. (For the record, I do possess a bike but am not mad / brave enough to ride it to work).
So, we lost the toss and were put into the field with GTL and Gokul opening the bowling. The former opened his account with a plum LBW and continued to bowl lively away swing taking three wickets for 28 off nine. The latter came off for Atterbury and went on to manipulate proceedings in the field by holding two catches off a variety of Atterbury deliveries. As for the opposition, their left-handed number two (a student) made the majority of their runs (87) and was only halted by Cutler. And their nine and opening bowler managed 37. The rest of the batsmen were not up to much but a flurry of left-handers played with our bowlers’ guidance systems. The ones who stayed over the wicket to the lefties fared better. Cutler was as steady as always reinforcing his legitimate claim to be a class all-rounder with three for 27 off 11; Atterbury hustled three including a faster off-break turning from well outside the off stump to clean bowl a right-hander (Ballantine’s favourite delivery of the match apparently). A battle-scarred Thornton (wounded in the field diving to save a boundary off the author’s bowling) was economical for 28 off seven overs creating movement and collecting a wicket. Lastly, Fordham was tidy for his one over giving away one and was also the architect of a run out Jonty Rhodes would have been proud of.
Tea was excellent and the prospect of two fine strokers, Cutler and Swamy, going in to open was comforting. Cutler was in his stride quite early with several boundaries but played on for 15. Gokul stayed at the crease for 34 and made many fine shots including a six over to the trees. Our skipper fell to their number two bowler who looked pretty useful. Jerricho was good for 12 but his partnership with Gokul was broken when a barking decision for LBW was given against GS. In came Atterbury with his new i-bat which performed well including a large six which wasn’t even given the full i-bat treatment. He made 18 and Londt clubbed a few boundaries for 15 and continued his partnership with Thornton who made 7. Thereafter, it sort of fell apart and I am sure the guys would agree there’s not much point going over that. Well done to Ben, though. His first game of cricket? Impressive.
In summary, not as good an innings as we would have liked. Perhaps batting second was trickier: the ball was swinging and moving off the pitch and sometimes keeping low. They also had some young shavers who were pretty energetic in the field (showing off with their over-arm throwing in). But there are some good memories from this game and some nice cricketing moments to be proud of. Better luck next time.

Weather: Nice Toss won by: Old Paulines Result: Draw
Old Paulines 205 all out (T) Chadwick 181 for 4
Report by Richard Stewart...
Chadwick may have felt somewhat unfortunate not to have registered our first victory of the season. as we were 25 runs short of our victory target with six wickets in hand at stumps.
We took the field first and had a difficult start. Paulines' opening pair of Cato and Cato Jnr saw off the opening spells of Ed Smith and Gareth Londt. The score was ticking over quite steadily at the start of the innings with little sign of a breakthrough. Roger Gunasekera's terrier-like performance fielding at deep mid-wicket certainly played a part in minimising the run flow. The resistance was finally broken when Cato Jnr was caught down the leg side by Tim Ballantine off a Toby Cutler bouncer for 27.
The second wicket was an equally long time in coming. With the runs starting to flow rather quickly again, the skipper threw the ball to Thornton, whose metronomically accurate bowling kept the score down and started to add a bit of pressure. Thornton eventually struck by bowling Brooks for 37, and after Cato Snr was bowled by Toby Cutler for 66, Paulines' remaining batsmen gave little trouble to the scorers. Thornton (bagging 5 for 59) and Cutler (4 for 33) did the damage to Pauline's middle order. Cutler certainly owed one of his wickets to a brilliant reflex catch taken by Gareth Londt when a long-hop sat up and invited itself to be clubbed over mid-wicket. Another brillant catch was almost taken by the skipper Martin 'Rocky' Lailey, who fell awkwardly and almost injured himself taking one for the team!!
Fortunately for Chadwick, the Paulines' tail did not wag; nobody from five onwards managed to reach double figures. The innings was polished off with a lightning-fast stumping by Ballantine off the bowling of Thornton. Paulines' had their top three batsmen to thank for making sure that Chadwick's victory target would be a challenging one.
Ed Smith and Paul Jerricho opened the batting for Chadwick. Would they go for the win or would they aim to save the game? Toby Cutler, shattered from his marathon spell of sixteen overs, demoted himself to number three in the batting order. When Ed Smith was out for just two and it looked as if we might be in for an infamous Chadwick collapse. However Cutler and Jerricho put on 98 runs for the second wicket. The partnership was characterised by Cutler going for his shots and Jerricho doggedly refusing to give his wicket away, which certainly played a major part in saving the match for Chadwick. Jerricho's resistance was eventually broken when he was bowled by Godfrey for 18. This brought Branson Atterbury and his flashing blade to the crease and it looked like the victory chase would be on. Atterbury wasted no time in getting off the mark with a single before clubbing his second ball to the boundary for four and being out bowled third ball attempting a similar stroke.!
This brought Will Thornton to the crease and although Chadwick didn't quite keep up the run rate needed for victory, the century was still on for Toby Cutler. Cutler fell four agonising runs short of reaching three figures when he skied a simple catch to third man off the bowling of Cato Jnr, which brought the end to an impressive partnership of 75 with Will Thornton.
A good performance all round in a game that Chadwick will feel that they could have won. Old Paulines will have their top three batsmen to thank for getting the runs that kept them in the game.

Game 14 v Headley 26th July
Weather: Overcast, Light Drizzle Toss won by: Chadwick (Bat) Result: Won
Chadwick 171 all out (Time) Headley 141 all out (9)
Report by Toby Cutler....
Well another year, another thriller at Headley. Although note to Gareth, last ball victory is the preferred format here so must do better next time!
After having received an email from Nick earlier in the week regarding Headley's (their words!) "difficult upcoming game against Chadwick", I started to think Graham's complaints about no-one reading our website might actually be correct but in true, utterly random, Chadwick form we managed to break Headley's unbeaten, season long run. Let's hope they don't now read our stats for the season, it's Sunday cricket after all and we wouldn't want to be responsible for any self harm in an opposition side...
Arriving at the ground it was pretty clear the weather wasn't going to be like last year. It was overcast, dull, windy and soon there was to be a steady drizzle that lasted all day so a big thank you to all the ladies who turned up to support! On inspection the wicket was green and mossy. Rocky seems, after a no doubt frustrating fallow period, to have regained his ability to toss with the best of them and for the second week in a row won the right to tell the oppo what they do with themselves and put them into field. A disappointed Gareth who had been telling everyone how "fired up" he was had to wait an innings to get stuck into the Headley batters but it must have made him hungrier! More of that later...
Headley had a man late and another added to their name and shame list so asked if they could borrow a fielder for a few overs. Fortunately for us we had our secret weapon back from the labs at MI6, Chris "I haven't been on a cricket pitch for two years!" Samarakkody to hand and when like Laurence Harvey in the Manchurian candidate he heard the trigger words, "substitute fielder", his programming kicked in and he went onto the pitch to an unsuspecting but grateful Headley. Not for long they weren't. Rocky flicked the button on the secret control pad and he duly let a four and a single through his legs in the first over! Finally we know where all the subs money goes...
Lailey and Jerricho got off to a reasonable start, no glacial scree forming at the side of the wicket this week. Unfortunately Jerricho got one that kept a bit low and he played onto his stumps. This brought Cutler in, not as fresh as hoped after his weeklong rain shower in Wales. A few fours and a six that wasn't (strange rules at this place) and he fell to their skipper, a handy medium paced outswinger lazily snicked to the keeper. At 74 for 2 after 15 overs we were still feeling confident, especially with iBranson(TM) striding to the wicket. Unfortunately his eyes lit up a little too much and he plugged an inviting full toss back to mid off for a very quick 11. Thornton swaggered to the wicket (he had a beer or two at lunch) and never looked entirely comfortable (there's a lesson there kids) falling to the third LB shout in a row which was probably the least likely of the three but there you go.
This brought Londt to the crease who hopefully hadn't channelled all his aggression into his future bowling performance... Nope! 21 off their skipper's first over at him (including the shot of the day, jointly won with the skipper, a magnificent cover drive) and we were back on course for a decent score until he decided that watching the ball onto the bat was bad technique and was bowled trying to hit Cutler's hire car over the cow boundary! Never mind, his Errol Flynn-like 28 had us back on course at 137 after 27 overs, Rocky holding up the other end.
In came Fordham for his last Chadwick innings. Well for 2 years anyway. He was given a mission - to score his first four of the season. Which he duly did on the first ball! A lovely flashing cut through the off which would still have been four, even to a boundary that wasn't reachable with a throw from Stephen Hawking! He followed this with a quick single and we thought his first double figures of the season were beckoning but sadly it wasn't to be as he was caught behind in the next over hanging his bat out to dry for an entertaining 5. Next was the secret weapon Samarakkody who hit a lovely shot down past mid on but unfortunately mis-timed his second run and the bails came off with his score on one.
Things were looking bad for the Chadwick at this point at 139 for 7 on a very small ground but contributions from Griffith of 13, Stewart of 1 and our very own Monty Panesar, Tim Ballantine with an unbeaten 6 we managed 171 all out in 36 overs. Special mention must go to Rocky who played a proper captain's innings and guided us to a defendable total, finally finishing on 41 which also included a Vaughanesque off drive.
Tea was next, apart from it wasn't, due to their tea lady adding herself to the name and shame list. If Thornton had his way he would have put her on ours as well! "I am NOT going out to field without a proper cup of tea!" He eventually got his way but not until their innings was about to begin hence the photo I found on our camera yesterday of a lone mug fielding at mid wicket!
Well what can I say about our bowling performance? Firstly I don't think I've ever played in a Chadwick game where we've had the opposition half down with less than 50 runs on the board let alone 7 down. (there is photographic proof as well!) The plaudits must first go to Gareth who put in a magnificent performance to end up with what I'm sure will be the club's season best figures of 14 overs 4 maidens 6 for 44 including the match winner in the last over! He was more than ably assisted by the consistent performer Joe Griffith who glued up the runs at the other end and finished with 2 wickets as well.
Headley certainly didn't go down without a fight though and a couple of mentions must go to their utilitarian but effective skipper, Midmer who had a brilliant stand with a chap called Chew (number 14 on the menu in case you're hungry) which nearly saw them through to the draw, ending as they eventually did on 131. From our point of view though a special mention goes to their number 4 batter, Bolton who's first game it was for Headley. He was brave enough to give the LBW which won it for us but I suspect he won't be winning the newcomers award at the end of the season.... He does look like a quality player though so hopefully he'll make up for it with some runs for them.
All in all a great game of cricket with lots of laughs had and a (small!) nomination for tantrum of the season from yours truly in the penultimate over when I thought we were headed for the draw. Someone's got to have one, Alastair and Jerricho haven't played together for ages....

Game 15 v Spencer 2nd August
Weather: dunno... Toss won by: Spencer (Bat) Result: WON!!
Spencer 193 for 7 (Time) Chadwick 196 for 4
Report by P Jerricho....(unedited)
This game was played on the old 'Surrey Ovalites' pitch. Proper pavi these days...gone are the days of Jim Howard giving his Karaoke rendition in the old club house....thank God! (Sorry Jim...thought you were great)
Rocky lost the toss and we bowled, taking the field with 10 players which included two guests. Spencer are a strong side but Londt bowled superbly and at drinks they were 60 odd for 4. I don't know what they put in the batsman's drinks but another 100 runs were scored before the fall of the next wicket, and it looked like it might be one of those days...but wait a minute...Rocky turns to guest George Rettie...inspired...delivering 'pies from the sky' which were quite irrestible to the batsman ... and...yep...their key batsman is caught superbly on the long-on boundary by Hill. There's hope... and we take 2 more wickets before Spencer declare on 193 for 7.
Tea...
With a pretty slow outfield, this looks a pretty safe total for Spencer...but Chadwick are a determined lot these days and we are optimistic. Off to a steady start, Rocky scoring quickly and supported by Jerricho, who for once managed to spend some time at the crease, before sacrificing his wicket on 22 having established and opening partnership of 76...one brings two as they say, and guest Heard waked to the crease and back again without troubling the scorer (something of a relief for Tim perhaps)...76 for 2....ooops! But we have some serious batting to come and Cutler puffs out his chest and strides to the crease with another 100 in the back of his mind...I'd guess! He looked good as usual but was unfortunate to play on trying a delicate late cutter. He deflates his chest and walks back to the pavi rueing what might have been! Chadwick 114 for 3 as Londt steps up and gives the game the new momentum it needed if Chadwick were to force a win. After a shaky start, not scoring off two balls, he let loose and a win looked a possibility before Rocky (brilliant) holed out on 59, to bring Thornton to the crease. At this point a draw looked odds-on, but Thornton was in no mood to hang around, clubbing a huge six over long on (cow corner), to compliment two earlier 6's from Londt. Suddenly it's 27 needed from the last three overs..very tight..but Londt/Thornton saw us home with an over to spare. Phew! Very exciting, as Chadwick registered their third win of the season...we're on a roll...when we take the field with 10 men it seems.... PJ

Report by Joe Griffith....When Forty Overs was Forty T wo
On a hot and sunny day in SW20, Toby lost the toss, and we took the field.
Merton got off to a slow start with a steady spell from Griffith. Londt didn’t produce one of his devastation bowling performances.
Toby bowled eight good overs. Will Thornton had a magical spell of bowling, which his figures didn’t reflect, due to Chadwick’s fielding not being up to its usual high standard!
After a flurry of runs Lawrence Hill came off with a leg problem, but I think the fielder’s on the leg side were the ones with leg problems.
Then came our mystery bowler George Rettie who took the wicket of one of Merton’s main batsmen in his first over; and that is where the mystery ends!
With the score on 235, a tired Chadwick team came off the field; at the end of what we thought were 40 overs.
Chadwick was off to a bad start, losing a wicket with the first ball. Then a partnership between Jerricho and Toby got things moving, or should I say Toby got things moving! After Jerricho was out playing an attacking shot, Roger went to the wicket for a minute stay. At this point I decided to have a look at the opposition scorebook, and to my amazement we had bowled 42 overs. Well, it allowed Jerricho to have a bowl! Toby and Will put on a very healthy partnership, followed by the usual Chadwick collapse, leaving Will stranded on 42 not out. Chadwick 133 all out.

Catches win matches...! (report by GF)
A mid week switch from the Cobham ground and the majority of their team barely out of nappies we roll up just after lunch to a beautiful bright, sunny and warm day in the delightful surroundings of Leatherhead's main ground alongside some very fit (or very stupid) people pounding away on treadmills in the windows of the adjoining Leisure Centre. The game started at 1pm and true to form 8 Chadwickians took the pitch as Rocky had lost the toss and we were fielding...not expecting to play but fearing the worst I got changed, broken hand and all and made us 9...15 minutes later Thornton and Hill stroll along the boundary from the wrong car park and, facing a barage of abuse, eventually jog to the pavilion and get quickly changed, by now though with 6 or so overs gone and huge gaps in the field their openers had already put on 40 odd runs, also by now it was quite apparent that Roger Gunesekera wasn't coming at all so that was my day sorted then! Now the old adage of catches win matches was to the fore yet again...even their own scorebook recorded how many times and when their opener was dropped,,(four in all) before he eventually went for 80-odd... he was not the only lucky so and so as at least another 4 chances went begging. Consequently no bowler really dominated or indeed ended with decent figures as their batsmen continued to score freely...ironically the only person to successfully take a catch was yours truly...despite Toby Cutler breathing down my neck and trying to poach it (he says he was backing me up as i'm injured) I held a skier at gulley, the sort that goes so high and "comes down with ice on it"...without causing further damage to my hand... even funnier was the final wicket taken as Hill dropped the catch, recovered and then threw at the stumps for a run out...not our highest "against" total but one that looked a bridge to far!...An excellent tea followed by a quick lesson on the operation of their electronic scoreboard almost causing Tim Ballantine a coronary and we padded up!...Opening with our secret weapon of a guest Martin Farrell...who had esponged various tales over tea of his exploits at county level for Gloucestershire..."ah you never lose it"...!..."ah... yes you do"...bowled for 1....
The first 8 overs of the innings really a total contrast to theirs and basically decided the match....they managed about 80 in theirs ....we managed about 8 in ours as two very young, very fit, very fast and very accurate bowlers pinned our batsmen down....that said it wasn't all doom and gloom as the ever reliable and fearless Toby Cutler played his shots and joined by in form Will Thornton (who recorded his maiden Chadwick 50) and with a 2nd wkt stand of 50 for a while kept us in the game. A dubious caught and bowled, Toby convinced he hit it into the ground (oh for the 3rd umpire tv replay!!) 5 runs short of a fifty and a record breaker of most 50's in a season (currently equal...5 more chances this season Tobes!!).
With Toby out another man in form Gareth Londt ably supported Thornton whilst notching up his own 50 but despite a 4th wkt stand of 89 we were always behind the run rate and with a mini mid order collapse the loss was inevitable, had this been a time game we would have considered it an honourable draw as we recorded our "highest for" score of the season so far.
Off the field Alastair and Julie finally received their awards from last year, (see pics page) Toby got his Bill Frindall Man of the Match trophy back from the engraver and Lawrence Hill was last seen attempting to have a shower in his jeans....

Game 18 v Bank of England 23rd August
Weather: Glorious! Toss won by: Chawick (Bat) Result: Lost
Chadwick 175 for 7 Bank of England 176 for 1
Report by Tim Ballantine....
A bright and beautiful summers day. A flat, hard, bouncy wicket and an outfield like a billiards table. What more could you possibly want? Ah yes, the distant sound of cheers going up as the aussie wickets fell. And Toby was at a stag do!!!
Lailey won the toss and elected to bat.
Our esteemed president, Max Howard, led Jericho to the crease and between them they compiled an opening stand of 63 before Max was caught really well on 43. As good as 63 for 1 sounds (and it is good for Chadwick) the run rate was slow, and later, when Jerricho was run out for 22 by a direct throw to the stumps, he had been at the crease for an hour and forty minutes. An injection of pace was required. Was Lailey the man to speed things up?
No, he wasn’t.
His first ball was a chest high beamer (remember he only has little legs) and his attempted slog was dollied up off the top edge to the keeper. Amazingly the no ball was not called. Only Ricky Ponting looked more upset on the day.
Gareth Londt meanwhile had picked up the pace and 3 quick boundries on his way to 17 when he was brilliantly caught in the deep. The fielder jumped up and backwards to a ball that was clearly going over his head; there was a whirl of arms and legs and up he came with the ball! Our hats are off to you sir.
Things were looking even worse when our young guest Ben was bowled two balls later - the score 98 for 5
Cometh the hour, cometh the man they say, but in this case it was Lawrence Hill, pie hitter extraordinaire. Eight fours in seventeen scoring strokes, he top scored on 44 not out - only time robbed him of his half century.
Richard chipped in with 6 and Joe, looking very dapper in new pads and wielding his beefy new bat scored 15, while the young Robin Howard was 2 not out.
We declared at tea for 175 runs - probably fifty runs short of par!
Tea was real china and served by ladies. There was cream on the scones and fine sandwiches and fruit cake. If this is quantitative easing lets have more of it!
As we strode out after tea we knew something special would be required to win. It seemed it might happen when in the third over Joe, who had twice been firmly driven by the Bank’s confident opener, put one in a little bit faster and shorter. The extra bounce induced an edge that was caught behind (eventually) by Tim Ballantine.
Unfortunately that was pretty much our last chance. The incoming bat went on to score 86 and their number two nudged, nurdled and swiped 75 without looking in danger. It was hot hard work but hugely compensated for by the lovely venue and friendly opposition - bring on the rematch.
need time to recover from the shock of Teflon Tim taking a caught behind...(lol...ed)

ummm...report by Lawrence Hill...not sure the medication is working....
The sun hung like a ripening plum in an azure autumn sky as the Gentlemen of Chadwick strode once more into combat. How we mocked the opposition on that glad confident morning – Hubris Mr Thornton, Hubris!
Princely Toby slashed and burned his way inexorably towards Chadwick’s all-time batting record until undone (and run-out!) by Branson’s uncannily accurate impression of an escaped circus monkey on a crystal meth comedown. Acrid tears of self-loathing and locker-room violence ensued. Talk re-surfaced of a big-bucks transfer to some fancy cricket club in posh south-east London.
Still, Chadwick’s famed middle-order stalwarts would surely save the day once more – or so we thought. The oppo skipper had other ideas. Step forward the conference’s most fearsome octogenarian pie-chucker from the sewage-works end. Blitzed on Sanatogen, and only slightly discomforted by his bulging colostomy bag, this wrinkly Apollo wrought pitiless vengeance on our supine sloggers. Like mating season at a wetland bird sanctuary, duck followed duck.
What else is be told of this sorry saga? Our own brave Captain Gam cried off the battlefield with a chipped fingernail to be replaced by Lisa, fetchingly coquettish in Graham’s slinky off-the-gut tank top.
And it was over. The death of season 09, the organist strikes up a mournful dirge as the black curtains close on another year of broken dreams. Go Chadders!

footnote...
Toby Cutler (755) was agonisingly 15 runs short of beating Nick Smallman's (769) long standing record of most runs in a season and just to round off the season he and Gareth Londt started the game level on 23 wkts only to see Gareth take 2, (which included a stunning catch by stand in keeper GF...LOL) whilst he remained wicketless...still, he won't leave the do empty handed....
